Garibaldi Provincial Park reopens for day-use access

Staff report
July 20, 2022 7:27am

Day use in the Cheakamus Lake area and camping at Helm Creek in Garibaldi Provincial Park is now open again for people to enjoy.

People are required to have a free day use passes to visit the area and can get one online at https://reserve.bcparks.ca/dayuse/

However, the Cheakamus Lake and Singing Creek campgrounds will remain temporarily closed to reduce wildlife attractants and will be phased in later once the initial opening has been assessed for safety.  The area has been closed since June 17 due to an aggressive and food conditioned bear. BC Parks has been unsuccessful at trapping the bear, indicating it has likely moved on from the Cheakamus Lake area.

BC Parks has also cautioned people about rough conditions at Garibaldi Lake. Bear encounters also remain a possibility and it is recommended that people carry bear spray, be familiar with its use, travel together in groups, and make noise while hiking.

Bear attractants (food, garbage, bug spray, deodorant, etc) must not be left unattended. Doing so may result in eviction from the park and/or fines under the Park Act and Wildlife Act.  Visitors are encouraged to report any aggressive bear behaviour to the COS by calling the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line: 1-877-952-7277.
