RMOW council has approved a staff request for $3.2 million from the Employee Housing Reserve toward a new rental development project in Whistler.

At a council meeting on July 23, the RMOW planning department requested employee housing reserve funds to the Council to finalize the monies needed for the Cheakamus housing project.  The money will go to fund a portion of the equity of a new rental housing project at 1475 Mount Fee Road. Premier Eby announced the project as part of the BC Builds program to create more housing in communities across the Province.

The new project, built in two four-storey wood-frame buildings, will feature 104 new homes ranging in size from studios to one, two and three-bedroom units to suit the various needs of individuals and families. BC Housing will contribute $12.7 million, and Whistler Housing Authority will contribute $2 million.

The BC Builds commitment is the single largest provincial funding announcement for Whistler’s workforce housing since the Olympics and the first BC Builds funded project for Whistler. The new building, slated for completion in 2026, will include 104 units with everything from studio apartments to three-bedroom units to fit the needs of both individuals and families.

BC Builds, launched in February 2024, aims to fast-track delivery of homes for people with middle incomes by leveraging government-, community- and non-profit-owned and underused land through government funding and financing.
