Conservation Officer Service (COS) officials are urging residents in the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood to secure their homes after reports surfaced of a young bear entering residences and climbing balconies in search of food.

As bears prepare for hibernation, they actively seek extra calories to sustain them through the winter. The COS recommends residents take immediate action to reduce bear attractants around their properties.

To help prevent further encounters, residents are advised to:

  • Lock all doors, including balcony doors.
  • Clean BBQs thoroughly after use or store them securely.
  • Remove pumpkins and other potential bear attractants from outdoor areas.

COS officers are conducting educational outreach in the Cheakamus area, reminding residents of best practices for bear safety. Anyone who spots a bear in or near their property is encouraged to contact the COS at 1-877-952-7277.
