High streamflow advisory issued for Howe Sound

staff report
November 9, 2024 4:13am

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the South Coast, which includes the Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound, North Shore Mountains, Lower Mainland, and Fraser Valley.

This advisory means river levels are expected to rise quickly, but flooding is not expected. However, swift-moving rivers pose safety risks, and minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

Heavy rain and strong winds are also set to begin Friday, November 8, with storms expected to last several days. Two main storm events are forecast: one from Sunday to Monday and another from Tuesday to Wednesday, bringing moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the week.

Rivers are currently at typical seasonal levels but may rise sharply because of heavy rain in previous weeks. However, cooler temperatures could lead to snowfall in higher areas, which might help limit runoff despite heavy rain. People are advised to clear leaves from storm drains, secure outdoor items, and stay cautious near rivers and streams.

The River Forecast Centre will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
