BC Parks has temporarily closed the Rubble Creek trail in Garibaldi Provincial Park following cougar sightings earlier this week.
Officials say Conservation Officers responded to reports of cougars in the area on Sunday, June 8 and Monday, June 9. The closure will remain in effect for one week, with the trail expected to reopen on Tuesday, June 17.
Park visitors are urged to report any aggressive wildlife to the Conservation Officer Service RAPP line at 1-877-952-7277.
In addition to the closure, BC Parks has issued a reminder about lingering spring snow conditions at higher elevations throughout Garibaldi Park. Campers heading to backcountry areas such as Elfin Lakes, Rampart Ponds, Garibaldi Lake, Singing Pass, and Wedgemount should be prepared for winter camping conditions, as tent pads remain snow-covered.
Micro-spikes or snowshoes are strongly recommended for safe travel, and visitors are advised to carry animal-proof food containers, as hanging food may not be possible in snow-covered terrain.
A separate trail closure along Rubble Creek is also scheduled for later this year, from October 14 to 31
