Lillooet RCMP is issuing a word of caution about an extortion scam involving a local man who sent nude photos to a stranger on social media.
On November 8, a man reported that he had sent a nude photo to a Facebook profile with name ‘Melanie Barry’ while he was drunk. Since then, ‘Melanie’ began demanding money and threatened to publicly share the local man’s nude photos.
The woman provided an international phone number and police had no means to identify Melanie. The man was advised by police to not send any money and to report and block Melanie on Facebook. He was also advised to avoid sending nude photos to strangers online.
To learn more about the red flags to watch for in the most common types of scams, Lillooet RCMP advises people to see BC RCMP Frauds and Scams, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or the Competition Bureau where people can obtain a copy of the Little Black Book of Scams.
