Brace yourself for a very hot weekend. A Special Weather Statement is in effect for Whistler and Pemberton as scorching weather approaches.
From Friday to Tuesday, the South Coast and inland areas of the north and central BC coast will experience unseasonably hot weather, with temperatures soaring close to 30 C and more.
The highest temperatures are expected on Sunday and Monday with daytime highs 10 to 15 degrees Celsius above seasonal values while overnight lows 5 to 10 degrees above what is normal for this of year.
There is also a threat of local flooding as snowpack melts with increase in temperature leading to high stream flow levels, cautions Environment Canada.
“While the developing heat may result in daily temperature records being broken, it must be emphasized that the expected hot conditions will not approach those reached during the “Heat Dome” of late June 2021,” the agency said.
Meanwhile, BC Wildfire crews are currently battling 62 active wildfires in the province. Of these 62 active incidents, 91% are under control or being held. Only five active incidents remain out of control. To report severe weather, send an email to BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
