The Resort Municipality of Whistler has opened the bidding for bike parking racks in Whistler Village and other prime locations. According to the notice, these racks will be in Blackcomb Lodge, Meadow Park Sports Centre, and Whistler Olympic Plaza.

The winning contractor will be responsible for supplying, installing, managing, and operating “a smart, secure bike parking rack system in three prime locations on RMOW property.”

“This pilot program is intended to provide residents and guests with a convenient and safe system to secure and recharge their bicycles in key high-profile locations while demonstrating trends in user demand to justify rapid expansion to other places. The integration of easy-to-use smartphone application technologies and visually appealing bike parking racks with proven security performance are key demonstrations of this pilot program,” the bidding document states.

One of the unique features of these bike racks is that they can be operated by smartphone application technology for public use. The integration of easy-to-use smartphone tech and visually appealing bike parking racks will be the key features of this pilot program.

According to the brief, each bike parking rack should provide an integrated power socket for e-bike charging. The RMOW will provide the power supply to each bike rack at no cost to users. The municipality aims to finish installing and operating bike racks in these areas by June 30.

Interested proponents can submit their proposals to climatechange@whistler.ca, addressed to climate action coordinator Maria Thorlakson, by May 8, 10 a.m. The winning proponent is expected to be announced on or before May 10.  This initiative to enhance Whistler‘s bicycle accessibility aligns seamlessly with the municipality’s 2020 Climate Action Big Move strategy. By 2030, the aim is for half of all journeys within Whistler to be either active or on public transit.
