The Resort Municipality of Whistler will install “Big Belly” waste bins throughout the Village this summer. These innovative bins, designed to accommodate pizza boxes, aim to capture a common source of litter and reduce animal attractants.

RMOW crews will also be working on several summertime projects that aim to improve the town’s infrastructure and environment.

Key 2024 summer initiatives:

Beverly Lake Trail Rerouting: The trail will be rerouted and partially decommissioned to avoid prime grizzly bear habitat, promoting safer coexistence with local wildlife.

Rainbow Park Initiatives: A new trial at Rainbow Park aims to divert more dog waste into the compost stream. Additionally, ongoing work at Rainbow Park is set for completion, to reopen in early July.

Lakeside Park Enhancements: Repairs will be made to damage caused by a water main break, alongside general improvements to the park.

Water Conservation Efforts: Landscaping and irrigation improvements will reduce water usage by implementing moisture sensors and other technologies. Several local parks will utilize non-potable well water for irrigation.

Village Furniture Replacement: The aging and well-used Muskoka chairs in the village will be replaced.

Wayside Park Improvements: New docks will be installed at Wayside Park, enhancing recreational opportunities.

Crabapple Creek Stabilization: Further work will be done to stabilize Crabapple Creek and ensure the health and safety of the waterway.

Switching to summer operations means municipal crews are working on several seasonal projects, starting with removing approximately 100 tonnes of sand and gravel from local roads and trails.
