Bear euthanized in Whistler after repeated home break-ins

July 17, 2024 6:25pm

Conservation officer service has destroyed a bear that entered several homes in Whistler.

On July 15, the Conservation Officer Service (COS) responded to a black bear that had entered a home in Emerald Estates. This particular bear had been previously seen inside several homes in Alpine Meadows.

RMOW said the COS decided to euthanize the bear due to concerns about public safety. According to the service, bears with minimal fear of people and readily access homes are unsuitable for rehabilitation or relocation.

Local residents are advised to be cautious about leaving doors and windows open, as these can provide entry points for bears. They must also correctly secure potential attractions for bears, such as garbage, pet food, and birdseed. Anyone who encounters wildlife conflicts is encouraged to report them to the COS at any time by calling 1-877-952-7277.”
