Multiple grizzly bear sightings have promoted the closure of Whistler trail, according to an advisory issued by RMOW. The advisory was issued on July 29 at 8:22 am for On the Rocks, part of the Alpine Trail Network in the municipality.
‘On The Rocks’ is temporarily closed due to multiple sightings of a grizzly bear. RMOW said there will be no access to Upper Lord Of The Squirrels, Rush Hour, Happy Hour or Last Call during this time.
RMOW is urging people to respect the closure and help reduce human-bear conflicts.
“We will continue to work with the Province to monitor the bear and reopen the trail when it is safe. Thank you for understanding and for helping to protect humans and bears,” the advisory notes.
Please be aware that when travelling on other alpine trails on the west side of Whistler. People can report bear sightings in residential areas by phoning the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR. Whistler Conservation Officers are notified daily about sightings and immediately in emergencies.
Whistler’s Alpine Trail Network is now officially open for the summer, and it includes more than 40 kilometres of alpine hiking and mountain biking on Mount Sproatt and Rainbow Mountain. RMOW is also reminding everyone to be adventure smart, respect the environment and be bear aware when accessing the network.
Both black bears and grizzly bears live on Mount Sproatt and Rainbow Mountain.
