A Special Weather Statement has been issued for several areas in southern British Columbia, including Whistler, South Thompson, Fraser Canyon, and Pemberton, as the region braces for heavy rainfall.

The heavy rain is expected to begin tonight and persist through Saturday, with total rainfall amounts ranging from 20 to 30 mm, and possibly up to 40 mm in the areas experiencing the most intense precipitation.

This advisory was issued in response to a low-pressure system currently located off the Oregon Coast, projected to move inland and track across southern BC today. The system is expected to bring periods of heavy rain, raising concerns about localized flooding.

Given the recent wildfires in the area, the risk of landslides is heightened, particularly in vulnerable regions affected by burn scars. Heavy rainfall and unstable soil conditions could increase the likelihood of landslides or debris flows, posing significant hazards to public safety, infrastructure, and natural landscapes.

Drivers are urged to follow recommendations from DriveBC regarding travel and road conditions and to monitor weather radar for the latest updates on rainfall and potential thunderstorm activity.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada and to report severe weather by emailing BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweeting using #BCStorm.
