At a council meeting today, Whistler Council will consider awarding a $1.1 million contract to Whistler Coast Construction Group Ltd. to upgrade the fire suppression system at Municipal Hall.
The proposed contract, valued at $1,138,623.10 (excluding GST), aims to bring the building in line with the latest fire and life safety regulations outlined in the British Columbia Building Code. The upgrades are needed to ensure the safe occupancy of Municipal Hall and its new annex.
The upgrades are essential for compliance with current safety standards and include several key measures:
- Floor Separation: Existing office glazing on Level 3 will be replaced with wired glass, creating a 45-minute fire barrier to enhance floor separation.
- Sprinkler Protection: Sprinklers will be installed on Levels 1, 2, and 3, improving the overall fire resistance of the building and addressing deficiencies in the current exit arrangements.
- Spatial Separation: A water curtain will be added along the interior of the west exterior wall, paired with non-combustible cladding, to bolster fire protection.
- Exit Facility Protection: Additional water curtains will be installed to safeguard the north external stairway and the south accessible entrance ramp from potential fire exposure.
According to a report to council, these enhancements are designed to improve fire protection throughout the building, addressing deficiencies and creating a safer environment for staff.
If approved, the project is expected to start in October 2024 and conclude by March 2025, with construction work phased to minimize disruptions. Staff may temporarily relocate to the first floor of the new annex during the renovations.
