Backcountry visitors to Garibaldi Provincial Park should be prepared for disruptions over the coming weeks. BC Parks has issued notices regarding noise, closures, and challenging conditions in several key areas.
Starting Sunday, September 22, visitors to the Singing Pass and Russet Lake area can expect significant noise disruptions near the Kees and Clare Hut due to helicopter activity and contractor equipment operating there. The construction will continue until Friday, September 27, with daily noise expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Taylor Meadows Campground and its day-use shelters are closed from September 1 to October 31 to protect seasonal bear foraging activities in the region. While hiking through the area is permitted, BC Parks advises visitors to avoid the area if possible. Outhouses remain accessible to hikers.
In the Garibaldi Lake area, high water levels have impacted access to the day-use and campground areas. BC Parks warns of challenging conditions, including wading through water and navigating slippery, rocky terrain. Hikers without proper footwear or strong hiking abilities are urged to avoid attempting the trek.
Meanwhile, cabin construction began near Garibaldi Lake Campground on Monday, September 16, and is expected to continue until October 27. As with the work near Kees and Clare Hut, this construction will involve increased helicopter activity and noise from heavy machinery. Visitors are reminded to exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from helicopters.
In addition, BC Parks reminds visitors that a free day-use pass is required at several trailheads throughout the park. Passes will be required daily for the Diamond Head, Rubble Creek, and Cheakamus trailheads until September 2, 2024. After that, passes will only be needed on weekends and holidays from September 3 to October 7, 2024.
