The Sea to Sky RCMP is urging residents and visitors in Whistler to prioritize safety when near lakes and ponds, as unpredictable ice conditions pose a risk.
With numerous lakes and ponds across the Resort Municipality of Whistler and surrounding areas, authorities warn that each body of water freezes and thaws at different rates, making conditions highly variable.
“No ice or body of water is ever entirely safe,” said Constable Antoine Graebling, Media Relations Officer with the Sea to Sky RCMP. “Anyone enjoying recreational activities near water must make their personal safety a top priority. Smart, educated decisions can help prevent accidents and keep emergency personnel out of harm’s way.”
To minimize risks, the RCMP has provided the following safety tips:
Check ice conditions carefully before heading out and consider how recent weather may have affected them.
Never venture onto the ice alone.
Inform someone of your plans, including your destination and expected return time.
Carry an emergency kit.
Refer to ice thickness guidelines provided by the Canadian Life Saving Society.
More information and resources on ice safety can be found on the Lifesaving Society of BC & Yukon website. The RCMP is reminding the public that while winter activities are a key part of life in Whistler, preparation and caution are essential to ensure a safe experience.
