The Sea to Sky Whistler RCMP is warning people to be vigilant after a counterfeit $100 Canadian bill was discovered at a local business on February 28, 2025. The fraudulent bill was turned over to RCMP investigators and removed from circulation.

Corporal Katrina Boehmer, Media Relations Officer for the Sea to Sky Whistler RCMP, noted that counterfeit currency reports in the area are rare but emphasized the importance of public awareness. “Our goal in releasing this information is to educate people on how to detect and handle counterfeit bills,” Boehmer said. “We want local business owners and individuals selling items online to have the tools to protect themselves from fraud.”

Authorities provided several key tips for dealing with suspected counterfeit bills:

  • Prioritize safety – Assess the situation and determine if there is any risk.
  • Remain courteous – The person using the bill may be unaware it is counterfeit.
  • Understand scrutiny is normal – Cashiers and sellers should feel comfortable examining large bills to prevent fraud.
  • Report immediately – Any suspected counterfeit currency should be reported to the police.

The Bank of Canada offers free training materials to help businesses and individuals identify counterfeit bills and reduce the risk of fraud. More information is available at Counterfeit prevention – Bank of Canada.

Police urge the public to remain alert and report any suspicious currency to authorities.
