The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is asking the public to help shape the future of Taluswood Neighbourhood Park, where geotechnical problems have shut down two tennis courts.
Sinkholes beneath the courts have made them unusable, and a 2022 review estimated that repairing the site and rebuilding the courts would cost more than $1 million. This is well beyond the municipality’s current budget, according to RMOW.
The park, located in the Taluswood neighbourhood and initially built by developer Intrawest in the 1990s, sits on land filled using excavation material from nearby construction. That fill has since shifted, creating unstable conditions. Because of the land’s limitations, Whistler officials say large hard-surface features, such as sports courts or buildings, are no longer viable.
Instead, the RMOW wants to redesign the space into a more usable, community-focused park for residents, particularly those in the Taluswood and Nordic Estates areas. Shaded terrain also rules out the possibility of a community garden.
Residents can weigh in through several public engagement opportunities:
-
April 23 – Add Your Voice Forum at Whistler Conference Centre
-
May 8 – Pop-Up Event at Eva Lake Park (9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.)
-
May 14 – Pop-Up Event at Bottomless Lake Park (4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
-
April 23 to May 31 – Online survey at whistler.ca
“While we explore geotechnical issues, we want to envision what’s possible for the future of Taluswood Neighbourhood Park,” RMOW said. ” We would like to hear from the neighbourhood to understand who lives nearby and would use the park. Feedback from the broader community is also welcomed.”
