Whistler RCMP investigate rental scam in community

Staff report
November 23, 2022 2:05pm

Whistler RCMP are investigating a rental scam in the community.

Police say a property owner has been entering rental contracts  by collecting damage deposits but then changing the terms of agreement and offering to return damage deposits if the new terms are not acceptable to the renter.

However, when renters cancel the agreements and ask for their money back, the landlord won’t refund the money.  The landlord uses a popular buy & sell website to recruit would-be renters, and police have six complaints involving this landlord.

Whistler RCMP anticipates the landlord to stop now that the police have spoken to this individual but are notifying the public so people looking for rentals are aware of such scams.

The Whistler Daily Post is a new, independent online newspaper for Whistler.
