Construction work in Whistler; expect Valley trail delays, traffic detours

staff report
May 2, 2023 7:37am

RMOW crews are working on infrastructure projects throughout the community and residents can expect delays and detours. These projects include servicing water and sewer mains, replacing the culvert on Hillcrest Drive in Alta Vista, road construction and annual Fitzsimmons Creek flood protection work.  Residents and visitors can expect road and Valley Trail delays due to the construction work.

The water and sewer maintenance work will require water and sewer service interruptions to some properties on Northlands Boulevard, Lorimer Road, Nesters Road and Whistler Road. Notices will be delivered to all affected properties 72 hours before the water is shut off and display signage in the area, so residents and visitors can plan ahead for the outage, RMOW says.

Crews are also replacing the valves and fittings along the water and sewer mains, upgrading  pressure reducing valve stations for the water system at Nesters Road and Lake Placid, as well as lining portions of sewer mains and manholes to prevent corrosion.  At Hillcrest in Alta Vista, RMOW is replacing the aging culvert that crosses Hillcrest Drive and runs down to Lakeside Park behind the concession.

“We will be doing road reconstruction at Lorimer Road, between Northlands Avenue and Day Lot 4, and Whistler Road from the underpass near Whistler Golf Club to the Conference Centre entrance. We will also do our annual work removing gravel from Fitzsimmons Creek for flood protection,” said RMOW. “When possible, we’re scheduling work to be minimally disruptive to traffic and Valley Trail users, and we are keeping water and sewer outages as brief as possible. Some shutdowns will be overnight to minimize impact to local businesses. Where possible, we have selected work techniques to minimize the disruptive construction work.”
