Campfire ban in effect for Whistler

June 22, 2023 2:48pm

A campfire ban is in effect in Whistler. By the direction of the Fire Chief, a campfire ban has been in implemented in Whistler. No fires or residential campfires are allowed in Whistler at any level of fire danger rating, including low and moderate, RMOW said.

The campfire ban in Whistler will remain in effect until further notice.

A CSA-rated or ULC-rated portable campfire apparatus that uses propane fuel is still allowed as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimeters and it is used in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

Yesterday, the Coastal Fire Centre had rescinded the campfire ban in the Sea to Sky, though local government can overrule such decisions. The campfire is permitted in Squamish, Pemberton and other areas of the Sea to Sky.

However, Category 2 and Category 3 fires will remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre, and effective at noon Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, will also include the Haida Gwaii Resource District. This prohibition is being enacted to help prevent human caused wildfires and protect public safety and will be in place until Tuesday, October 31, 2023, or until the order is rescinded.

The Category 2 and Category 3 prohibition also restricts the following activities and equipment: fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, binary exploding targets and air curtain burners. To report a wildfire call 9-1-1 or 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from your cell.
