Whistler has issued a Request for Proposal inviting qualified teams to submit design-build proposals for a new clear-span cable suspension bridge over Wedge Creek.
The new bridge will replace an existing timber bridge over Wedge Creek. The current 22-metre log stringer bridge has reached its end of life and requires removal and replacement.

The new bridge is a vital part of the Comfortably Numb Trail in Whistler, and proponents are encouraged to align their designs with the area’s recreational use and natural setting. The design phase has funding, and the construction phase is expected to receive funding in the second half of 2024.
Proponents are asked to prepare their bids in anticipation of 2024 construction and potential spring 2025 construction. According to the RFP, the project has a maximum desired value of $350,000.
The RFP states that the design requirement should include a simple, clear-span suspension bridge with railings, a length estimated at 22 metres, and a minimum clear deck width of 1.5 metres. The railings shall be a minimum of 1.4m in height. The bridge approaches must have a fence, railing, or other extension that flares away from the bridge ends to protect and funnel users onto the bridge. The new bridge alignment is close to the location of the existing bridge.

The RFP states that a 400 kg ATV should be able to cross the bridge. The bid notes that materials should be very low maintenance, long-lasting, and, where possible, sourced locally with consideration for environmentally friendly products. Construction will start in September, and the bridge will be completed in December. A 150m long, 2-metre wide construction access trail is expected to be built in the spring of 2024.
